Art review: Kiehl's & Kobra

Image
Carrying from where they had left off at Jonker Walk, Malacca (2015) Kiehl's Wall Mural has now (2019) descended upon the Silang neighbourhood. It paints over the sputum of our vibrant betel-leafers.  Art trivia is coming at you from Spitters' Paradise at Soong Kee's heritage wall in a gloriously showy mode for art critics to chime in their two cents. It embodies our diverse cultures habituating in Chinatown. The simplistic, flat, two-dimensional approach isn't without reason. It is convoluted to be sucked into a three-dimensional vortex of, say, the weed-inspired Kobra fleshed out by Eduardo, our South American cousin.  It is safe to assume the Brazilian and our brothers under the bridge are using the same bong with a different plant. Yet, they possess an eye for graffiti like no other. But then, that is what we do with the minimalist approach in Kiehl's offering. It wakes up the child in us and avoids all paths which may invoke the wrath of our local censorshi...

Carmakers' (Female) Secret

Image
"BMWs are built for hair-dressers." - Peter Wheeler.   An open secret contemporary marques harbor is that 'females' sanction their car-designs before production. From interior trim to exterior shapes, appointments to position of controls, down to design of the door handles are approved by women engineers before cars make the showroom. It is not surprising, given the majority of car-buyers are women and a fair number of men report that their choice of cars are influenced by females, the feminization of the male bastion in car design has taken root so deep that sight of the stick-shift, a manual spindle-operated window, lack of power-assist, air bags, air-conditioning or the much vaunted vanity mirror and cup holder, would make the contemporary driver cringe. The trend began in the 50s when General Motors mooted Damsels Of Design, a group of female art professionals equipped with industrial-design training. A member of the group then said  "Not too long a...

Ellsworth's Spiral spawns a 'machine' experience

Who spawned Industrial Music? Was it Nine Inch Nails emulating a synthesizer drilling into a human skull with Trent Reznor distorting his buzz-saw timbre or did Ridley Scott create a demand for the genre after dreaming chalk-board screeches for his score fused with a cacophony of crown wheels grinding a cluster of rusty pinions!

It will not work for some but the monkey in the brakes amidst the glorious mechanicals offered by Terry Ellsworth barreling into Reznor's Downward Spiral spawns a fulfilling 'machine' experience.

The 'vocabulary' of the Cannondale SuperV DH4000

Image
@ 50 kilometers per hour @ 5 kilometers per hour The cacophony emanating from the bowels of the DH4000 is 'masculine' sweet to a mountain-biker. While Trent Reznor evolves 'Industrial' music through synthesizer and a buzz-saw timbre, The Red Bitch wrenches out a distinct 'Machine' genre through pawl, sprocket, chain and a monkey in the brakes. The language is brutal but the mechanicals of the 47 pounder are perfect. It sounded yesterday just like it did 15 years ago. Words, Videography, Action - Tommy Peters

Zappa: The Tonight Show 1963 1993

The Tonight Show 1963 is a crystal-ball of what he already was. At 22 he demonstrates that his psychic is not a later accretion but a previous manifestation. In his toolkit he wields zany from Bicycle to Synclavier while merging intellect, imagination and humor to evolve a distinct genre – Zappa. He makes no apologies for narratives that morph vulgar from classical to rubato spliced with paranoia and exclamatory interruptions in between. He decries recognition but is inducted posthumously into a Rock & Roll Hall with a Grammy a Bust and a 'Frank Zappa Day' in the equation. To surmise, the Mozart of the 20th took the condescending alec out of The Tonight Show in 1963 and left the same platform placid 30 years later. Words - Tommy Peters

The Cylinder and Little Green Book

Preamble: - When a Persian King wants to chill Jethro Tull  makes the brill.  He cajoles Anderson to pipe Bouree into his thing and gribble Bach from Wood into a blend of fine cocktail lounge jazz to Budapest the commemoration of Babylon into the folds of his beloved Persia and Aqualung accepts the King’s brief with Rupi's Dance but not before he receives a royal promise that the Cylinder would rule the Gallery of the Minstrel ad infinitum without pause. 2500 years ago Cyrus the Great commanded Greater Persia where everyone was treated with respect, judged by ability rather than station and where diverse creeds were accepted as norm rather than tolerated. In 539 BC the man walked into Babylon and introduced the Cyrus Cylinder,  the first charter of human rights, which stands universal to this day. 30 years ago Ayatollah Khomeini commanded Persia and introduced his  Little Green Book, his book of gems , which represents to this day the fab...

Jack Pershing's 'Wicked' Convention

Preamble:- No one describes unadulterated pain better than  KoRn,  NuMetal's Grunge specialist. ‘Wicked’ is an appropriate ensemble that pans out to dregs as they stand before their open grave and stare aghast at fresh pig-entrails with a prospect of having the slosh smother their dead bodies in order to deny them a martyr’s paradise and while ‘No Place To Hide’ captures Pershing’s wicked execution convention ‘Twist’ is the teaser that conjures up the proverbial bullet dipped in pig blood. In lieu of evidence, the commentary is consigned to the category or, as the radical Islamist would prefer, the dustbin of  Urban Legends . Although the initial story is personalized to the narrative, even an established historian, let alone a victim, would not survive the prevailing atmosphere by being politically or religiously incorrect. The story alludes to a source whose family member was kidnapped by the  Abu Sayyaf  but returned unharmed without exchange of the...

Pranayam: On The Table

“I would have not known you if you had not spoken to me” he said as the annulment of age liberated the pranasahkti in his child-bride and while nutrients moved the  mooladhara   chakra  of the genitals fueled by a sumptuous Bohor Mali the quailed Quail perched  On The Table  stared across like an  infans solaris  evoking the silent portion of the primitive with finite burgundy  Pranayama  replacing  Manna  in a fusion of science and human potential omnipresent in the main arena as in the coalescing of the Chosen few without enumerating the splicing dicing and narrative but the baritone of  eight ports  that fuse elements  On The Table  into a working structure that works.  “I would have not known you if you had not spoken to me” Words, Videography - Tommy Peters (The clip was made on a Mac with CoverVersion’s Cuboid and Screenflow. The Brute & Sakineh Ashtiani

Image
Preamble:- Satriani's 'What Breaks A Heart' captures the sentiments of Fasride and Sajjad Ashtiani while Marco Brambilla's "Ghost" (@ 6.00) depicting a multi-shot rendition of Natasha Poly's deconstruction is their mother's lingering pain. Fasride and Sajjad Ashtiani  said the term Stoning is so horrific that they would never use it. Instead, they politely say that their mother is in danger and all options are exhausted. The brutal linguistic of the Iranian judiciary obscures the tranquil language of its victims as it pronounces a mother of two to be Stoned to death. It is another day in the office of the Iranian judiciary while at the United Nations, Prime Minister Ahmadinejad wax lyrical to a rapt audience on human rights of the oppressed. It is not a question of fearing the hypocritical cowards but suffering them. The deafening silence of the Hollywood staple and its Feminist left is understandable, even when a news-bite of medieval prac...

The Prize & Sidebar: Siti Nurhanim Aziz

Siti epitomizes  the female’s true calling – the power to love. In a trying moment of her life, she extricates the gallstone of hate and liberates her power - the only power left to her. Her generation pronounces her weak and underachieving, not because her love is naive, but because gallstones of the generation renders such unremitting love, unachievable. A doctrinal institution says that between a spouse and child, one is a prize and the other, a sidebar. Siti said to her spouse that he would always be the prize and her child, the sidebar. She said to her child "as much as mummy loves you and daddy in equal portions, you will always be mummy's sidebar while daddy will always be mummy's prize". Her child is taken aback by the harsh words but when the little girl regains her composure, she embraces her mother's wisdom because (a) she is growing up to be somebody's prize (b) her unit is safe and fool-proof because daddy is mummy's pri...

Tool: Schism - The Patient

When dreary sounds emanate from depths of a strange planet, the atheist prays that God is at last eliminated from the theorem, at which point Tool is  quantum gravity  thrust upon the daft punk who hangs onto the  principle of contradiction  caused by fear of his dark side. The quantum causes unsettling vibrations and articulating pain, which allows him to vomit what he does not remember consuming. The disbeliever yearns for warm pig blood filled  with Schism  -  The Patient  and while trapped in his cold coffin, he ejaculates feverishly craving for infinite space screaming ‘I Know The Pieces Fit.’ To the hip and hop and everything else the fool thinks is cool (a) Tool does not boast a fan base but a growing crop of  Manchurian Candidates  (b) denial of basic musical assumptions is converse with the ideological basement (c) lyrical expletives are not the yardstick for Parental Guidance but the potential Manchurian th...
