"This brender has many funsen" • Premier Super-G

Image
Premier Super-G  "This brender has many funsen" is a euphemism for the fold-out, disguised as an instruction manual that comes with several mass-produced kitchen appliances from Asia. But Sivanesan's Premier Mixers Instruction Manual caught my attention with its unique font and 4-colour layout. The manual's syntax and grammar provide a glimpse into the features of the product it describes. The Premier Super-G mixer is genuinely a work of art with its rinse and dry stainless-steel jars, imposing ABS shell encasing an overkill 550-watt motor, and the 'BMW' switch knob. It's not just a blender; it's a juicer. Creaming a tomato and carrot with goat milk in just 5 seconds is easy, and crushing a bowl of almonds is an understatement. If you're inclined towards almond milk juice, forget the small jar. Just add a handful in the middle jar with milk and ice. 10 seconds later, you have a delicious and healthy drink. Another 10-second 3-glas...

Return of the 12th Imam • ©2011 Iran by 1tommypeters1 Belief is an impetus for action. Say you believe your home is about to be burgled. The perception of such certainty would have your vigil for intruders for as long as the conviction holds. It underscores that belief is an impetus for action, but sometimes it becomes stimuli for detrimental ones. In Christianity, the term 'Rapture' is evolving into a euphemism for conviction, a harmless conviction. It is not a biblical word, but whenever the term erupts, non-adherents roll their eyes and entertain themselves with a plethora of evangelists who go about embellishing biblical prophecies as fact, but the point is, predicting the second coming or 'rapture' of Christ has spawned a harmless industry, if not entertaining. At worst, you have a coterie of placard-wielding die-hards holding up traffic, lest a deluge of printed pamphlets littering township and neighbourhood is preferred. In Shiite dogma, the spec...

Infusion, not Legislation

Image
I will pay attention if someone says Malaysia is not Islamic by legislation. A nation becomes Islamic not by decree but when the infusion of the Islamic doctrine is achieved. On one hand, infusion began in 1969 when Tunku Abdul Rahman was appointed the first Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Conference. It then progressed to the Cairo Declaration, a pact ratified by the OIC in 1990 and two years later, the 'Shar'iah' amendment to the Federal Constitution was introduced. A decade later, the then Prime Minister, Dr Mahathir Mohamad, assumed the OIC Chair; at that point, he arbitrarily declared Malaysia ‘Islamic’. On the other hand, at any one time, 20,000 Malaysians are being schooled in the Middle East in the nuances of Wahhabism. A sneak preview was offered during the Arab Spring when statistics unwittingly spilled out. 11,000 students were stranded in Egypt and 5000 in Libya. In our midst is a generation of Malaysians who subscribe to Wahhabism, wi...

The Spirits of Ramlee & Aziz

Image
If someone says the Obedient Wives Club is not a laughing matter, I would pay attention. The proliferation of this seemingly out-of-sync group is a hint that an unfamiliar theological cloak is surreptiously enveloping Malaysia. Imagine a young Lim Kit Siang in the 60s having a good time in a coffee shop with a mix of friends and the affable Imam brings up the subject of Hudud. There would be guffaws of laughter and drinks all around, not to mention that the cleric even may have found the idea of an Anti-Apostasy legislation, a preposterous suggestion to begin with, in Malaysia's multi-religious and multi-cultural fabric, then. That was the 'spirit' in the air. Call it the era of P. Ramlee or good-natured Sufism, if you must. 50 years later, the fattened polygamist with his wives in tow may still offer some comic relief to Malaysia's multi-faceted society, but to underscore the enveloping cloak, a mere mention of the Islamic legal code, wipes the smirk of Kit...

Kisha: Tayalan's Narrative

Image
compassionate • methodological • carefree "The courage of this amazing girl reflects the courage of her father and loving family" A reason I write is to craft logical narratives based on logical foundations. I assemble evidence and seek opinion. Much alike living from day to day - so I thought. Tayalan rang. I was, as always, upbeat at the prospect of engaging my dear friend - until he mentioned his daughter. A drive to the sea-front over Christmas brought life into perspective. From the awe of nature, I sought an answer - a 'teaching moment' . I was downcast, just thinking of her and the 'cracking' of her father's heart. When I met her yesterday, she was exactly as she was several years ago, notwithstanding the transcendent moment of her life. Kisha is still a happy little thing, despite the pain she obviously bears. In masking her grief, she applies the Talmudic concept to the letter. Her loving father is in the process of crafti...

Flo's Starsky: 1998 - 2009

Image
In Islamic discourses on the perceived impurity of dogs, one tradition suggests that black dogs are evil (*). This tradition, rooted in pre-Islamic mythology, did not impact Islamic law when jurists of the time considered it to be falsely attributed to Islam. Nevertheless, the nexus between the law and contemporary s ocial behavior continues to be an evolving bridge challenging the dynamic between a perceived religious dictum and God’s creation of nature. In Flo, a practicing Muslim, the bridge was never an issue because for her, it never existed. She had always sided with God’s creation rather than subscribe to a religious dictum. Starsky - her lovely companion of 11 years - was simply a testimony of God’s work. In Azura, a typical Muslim girl, the bridge reached its logical conclusion at a young age, when she had the good fortune to meet Starsky. The little fellow first terrified her. He stood there in front of the shrieking girl, gazing at her periphery, won...

MING: 1999-2009

Image
Preamble:- 8.48am February 21 st 2009 saw the demise of Ming, a confidante, companion, friend and a bundle of joy to Alex Peters, not to mention, Flo, Dian, Carol and those his life touched. Ming the entertainer de-stressed anyone who laid eyes on him and girls in particular just loved to cuddle the pocket dynamo. He did not have a 'business end' and given the pain he endured, he was still all 'fun'. He succumbed to cancer but not before thumbing his nose at kemo several years. His resilience was amazing. He hung on as long as he could. The video posted below is Alex’s labor of love for his dear Mingy. I sense dread in the impending storm. Mingy paused. “Would you face it alone! You see, I have no fear of ponies, none at all. I know them and they me” . You look bushed, your voice, tired. Your effort was more daunting than thought, wasn't it! That is because I am complex, born and bred. Just look at me and you thought I was a thoroughbred mutt? ...
