The ‘silent’ films Braun made were recently brought to life with ALR (automated lip reading) technology developed by a speech recognition expert, Frank Hubner. The photos were taken at the end of May or beginning of June 1944, either by Ernst Hofmann or by Bernhard Walter, two SS men whose task was to take ID photos and fingerprints of the inmates (not of the Jews who were sent directly to the gas chambers). The photos show the arrival of Hungarian Jews from Carpatho-Ruthenia. Many of them came from the Berehovo Ghetto, which itself was a collecting point for Jews from several other small towns. Early summer 1944 was the apex of the deportation of Hungarian Jewry. For this purpose a special rail line was extended from the railway station outside the camp to a ramp inside Auschwitz. Sophie Scholl is the icon of White Rose, the Facebook in its day, whose messages terrorized the Reich and sowed the seeds of hatred towards Hitler and the Nazi party.  Sophie and friends were formidable but in a sense, quite 'ordinary.' I would just give them a pat. However, the ones who should be highlighted every February 22nd are the cowards who persecuted them and those who watched from the sidelines. White Rose exhibited not a rash act but an inherent human impulse to save lives. The Stoning of Soraya M. is a docu-drama based on a true story directed by Cyrus Nowrasteh and produced by Stephen McEveety. It takes courage to make such a film. It takes courage to empower the victims of Islamic violence in that the script acknowledges the courage of Soraya Manutchehri who perished under a hail of stones in the hands of medieval practitioners.  Such projects will not be undertaken by the likes of Spielberg or Scorcese simply because a curious strain of Stockholm Syndrome has infected and continues to infect the Hollywood staple.
