My Sweet Satan † Stairway To Heaven

In the 80s, I was handed an audiocassette containing a lecture by Pastor Gary Greenwald on messages back-masked in Stairway To Heaven, Hotel California, Another One Bites The Dust, and other popular numbers.

Stairway To Heaven, in particular, is distinctive in that when the chorus is phonetically reversed at 75bpm, audible sentences occur, apparently about Satan.

If you sing and record the chorus in your own voice (as this YouTuber did), the same sentences occur when it is reversed. When I experienced it myself, it tingled the spine.

(The clip below is a 13-minute screencast I uploaded on Vimeo. Click the slider if it's hesitant in the beginning. After the pause, the second table turns in reverse, and note the bpm being brought down - to 75)

The chorus commences at 4.20.

"If there's a bustle in your hedgerow - don't be alarmed now - it's just a spring clean for the May queen - Yes, there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run - there's still time to change the road you're on"

The reverse of the chorus begins at 6.50 at 75bpm.

"So here's to My Sweet Satan - the one whose little path would make me sad - whose power is Satan - He'll give you 666 - There was a little toolshed where he made us suffer - sad Satan."

William Yarroll's take on how messages reach the subconscious:-

"At the base of the brain is a 'check valve' - the Reticular Activating System. Based on prior programming, emotional responses, and conditioning, messages we receive are sieved logically, then accepted or rejected by the 'conscious' left brain hemisphere. If this interpretive process fails to match the message in the 'conscious' left, it is then passed to the 'creative' right brain hemisphere for further evaluation. If the 'conscious' left finds no known matching information, the 'creative' right takes over the decoding process. If the 'creative' right mirrors a strange or incoherent message, it is acknowledged and stored rather than rejected."
