2009 • Axis of Evil • Christopher Hitchens

Political scholar Christopher Hitchens is only writer to have visited Iran, Iraq and North Korea in a single assignment. He examines the three countries he ‘sampled’ and begins by introducing Kanan Makiya’s (pseudonym - Samir al-Khalil) “Republic of Fear: The Inside Story of Saddam’s Iraq” where the wordsmith in the Englishman revisits the chill in hall in which Saddam Hussein chaired his first cabinet meeting and places the ‘ sheer animal panic’ at the feet of his audience in a way even the writer was not able to accomplish.

He examines differences between the regimes linked infamously as the "Axis of Evil" and places much needed comic relief at the feet of his audience.
